Digital Heritage and Humanities Collections
Formed in 2016 at the University of South Florida Tampa Library, the Digital Heritage & Humanities Collections (DHHC) initiative serves to document heritage sites, landscapes and objects, and to create digital learning tools and collections that promote sustainable heritage tourism and interpretation strategies through the use 3D and imaging technologies.
- The 3D Model Collection draws from work performed on a variety of grants and research projects involving digital heritage from around the world. University of South Florida (USF) Principal Investigators Drs. Lori Collins and Travis Doering are leading a new initiative at the USF Library to promote 3D applications and heritage science through digital scholarship. The Digital Heritage and Humanities Collections (DHHC) will take project and research data and create interactive and shareable tools for teaching, education, and research through the USF Library. These 3D models are lightweight, easy to share versions of work performed to archive, preserve, and foster stewardship for heritage and archaeological sites. Using 3D and reality capture technologies, these models can be used to support curriculum development, education, science and technology learning, and demonstrate how the role of libraries is transforming. 3D Models Digital Documentation Collection
- The mission of the City of St. Petersburg Parks and Recreation is to preserve, protect, maintain and enhance the city's park lands and recreational facilities and engage people in leisure activities that contribute to their quality of life. A number of archaeological and cultural heritage sites are located on these lands, and as part of a preservation and management effort, these properties are being mapped and documented using the latest in 3D survey technologies. The goal of this project is to provide a better understanding of these resources, as well as produce meaningful interpretation experiences for park visitors and other interested persons. An ongoing collaborative project between the St. Petersburg Parks and Recreation and the University of South Florida Libraries Digital Heritage and Humanities Collections group (Principal Investigators Drs. - Language, religion, literature, art, and architecture are foundational aspects of Armenian identity. These societal elements reflect a rich, deep, shared history and remain cultural touchstones within Armenian collective memory. But considering the Armenian diasporas, and subsequent establishment of communities across the globe, millions of persons of Armenian lineage may never have the opportunity to visit their ancestral homelands. How might these contemporary Armenians - especially younger generations - retain a connection or learn of their cultural identity and ethnic heritage? The purpose of the program is to bring together comprehensive information and interactive 3D visualizations of these cultural elements in a single, virtual location, readily accessible by anyone with an internet connection, anyplace in the world. - Working in collaboration with the 45th Space Wing of the United States Air Force, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS), this digital survey and documentation was undertaken by USF's Digital Heritage and Humanities Collections group in the USF Libraries (Principal Investigators Drs. Lori Collins and Travis Doering), to provide continuing baseline terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) survey, monitoring, and spatial recording for selected historic launch complexes. Targeted structures were chosen for ongoing assessment and 3D laser scan survey, and these data were brought together with aerial Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications in a digital platform for landscape and structure consideration. The project was performed in combination with Global Positioning Systems (GPS), videography, and imaging documentation, with the 3D terrestrial laser scanning providing the referent data for the derived 3D Computer Assisted Drawing (CAD) products a Cape Canaveral Space History in 3D
