Scenario Planning: Los Llanos and Caitas Sustainable Futures 2003 Thinking about the future is central to what planners do as visionaries and creators of alternatives. Imagining the future is also very human as well. Scenario planning is one technique to help communities think and plan for the future. Scenario planning is a process of structuring plausible, credible and reasonable alternatives for the future, by asking “ what do you think might happen?” In asking this question it requires people to examine the forces that are driving change. Scenario planning is not about predicting the future – rather understanding how a community perceives the future in the present. Today we will present our inventory and analysis of existing conditions in the area bounded by the road s to Los Llanos and Caitas. Our challenge will be to develop a realistic “storyline” of how the future m ight unfold, one that is not purely “good” or “bad,” but scenarios that help the community begin to take action toward a desired future.
