THE MONTEVERDE FRIENDS SCHOOL FI RST CAME TO SUSTAINABLE FUTURES 2009 TO PLAN THE DEMOLITION AND REDESIGN OF THEIR CURRENT KINDE R BUILDING INTO A NEW CONSTRUCTION, TWO STORY BUILDING THAT WOULD HOUSE A LARGER KINDER SPACE, A SPANISH CLASSROOM, A SPECIAL NEE DS AREA, AN EXANDED OFFICE AREA, AND A SECURITY APARTMENT. AFTER A SUBSEQUENT DISCUSSION AT A QUAKER MEETING, THE CLIENTS WANTED THE PROGRAM TO EXPAND TO POSSIBLY MOVE THE QU AKER MEETING ROOM INTO THE NEW BUILDING AN D SHIFT OTHER PROGRAMS AROUND. ULTIMATELY, IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT LOOKING AT THE LARGER PICTURE OF THE ENTIRE CAMPUS WAS NECESSARY TO ENSURE THAT THE MOST LOGICAL SPACES WERE BEING PUT INTO THE NEW BUILDING. PHYSICAL + SOCIAL CONTEXT THE SITE IS SITUATED IN THE UPPER PART OF MON TEVERDE ALONG THE MAIN ROAD THAT LEADS UP TO THE MONTEVERDE RESERVE. THE SCHOOL IS LOCATED ON LAND OWNED BY A QUAKER FAMILY AND SITS WITHIN THE SURROUNDING CLOUD FOREST. MONTEVERDE, COSTA RICA WAS THE HOME TO A FEW NATIVE LAND SQUATTERS BEFORE BEING OF FICIALLY SETTELED BY QUAKERS FROM ALABAMA IN 1951. THE MONTEVERDE FRIENDS SCHOOL WAS ES TABLISHED BY THE QUAKERS SOON AFTER THEIR ARRIVAL IN A CENTRAL LOCATION IN THE COMMUN ITY. SINCE THE BEGINNING, THE SCHOOL AND MEETING HOUSE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN LOCATED ADJACENT TO EACH OTHER. THIS SITE IS MORE THAN JUST A PLACE OF EDUCATION; IT IS THE HEART, OR CENTER OF A STRONG, CLOSE GROUP OF PEOPLE, THAT HAVE DEVELOPED THIS LAND FROM AN UNTOUCHED CLOUD FOREST INTO A THRIVING RURAL COMMUNITY. MOST OF THE EVENTS THAT HAPPE N AMOUNGST THE QUAKER COMMUNITY HAPPEN AT THE FRIENDS SCHOOL/MEETING HOUSE. THE SCHOOL IS RUN BY THE QUAKER MEETING, AND ITS EDUCATIONAL PRINCIPLES ARE BASED ON THE VALUES AND BELIEFS OF THE QUAKER RELIGION, MAINLY ON BECOMING A GOOD STRONG COMMUNITY MEMBER.

THE MEETING HOUSE IS THE CENTER OF THE QUAKER COMMUNI TY AND THE FRIENDS SCHOOL. IT IS A WOODEN STRUCTURE AND HAS ENDURED MANY YEA RS OF WEAR AND TEAR. SINCE THE MEETING ROOM IS PART OF THE ORIGINAL CAMPUS, THE SPACE IS SENTIMENTAL TO MANY OF THE COMMUNITY MEMBERS. BUT TO OTHER MEMBERS, THE DREAM OF A BIGGER AND NEW MEETING ROOM IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN MAINTA INING THE SOUL OF AN OLD BUILDING. WHEN THE EXISITING TWO STORY BUILDING WAS CONSTRUCTED, DOORS WERE PLACED IN THE MULTIUSE ROOM, WHICH IS ADJACENT TO THE MEETING HOUSE, IN HOPES THAT ONE DAY THE MEETING ROOM WOULD BE EXPANDED AND THE DOORS WOULD DIRECTLY CONNECT THE TWO SPACES. MANY PLANS HAVE BEEN PRODUCED OVER THE PAST TEN OR SO YEARS TO EXPAND THE MEETING ROOM, BUT SO FAR, NOTHING HAS BEEN DECIDED ON. THE QU AKERS HOLD A VARIETY OF EVENTS IN THE MEETING ROOM, SUCH AS WEDDINGS, FUNERALS, PHYSICAL EDUCATION (WHEN IT RAINS,) SQUARE DANCING, FUNDRASIERS, AND MANY SCHOOL PRODUCTIONS. IN MANY CASES THE ROOM JUST ISNT LARGE ENOUGH TO HOLD THE GROWING QUAKER COMMUN ITY, AND THE GROWING POPULATION OF THE SCHOOL. STRONG WINDS AND RAIN FROM THE NORTH BLAST THE EXPOSED WALL OF THE MEETING HOUSE, SO THE CLIENTS RECENTLY PUT SHEET METAL ON THE WALL TO PROTECT THE WOOD THAT IS ROTTING BEYOND. THE CEILING IN THE MEETING ROOM FREQ UENTLY LEAKS, FROM THE SKYLIGHTS, AND THE ROOM IS RELITIVELY DARK BECAUSE OF ITS LOCATIO N AND THE LACK OF SUNLIGHT PENETRATING THE CLOUD FOREST. AS FAR AS UNIVERSAL ACCESSIBLITY IS CONCERNED, THE CURRENT CAMPUS WOULD BE DIFFICULT, IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE, FOR A PHYSICALLY DISABLED PERSON TO MANUVER AROUND. THERE IS ONE ACCESS RAMP IN THE BREEZE WAY AREA OF THE SCHOOL WHICH ALLOWS WHEELCHAIR BOUND PEOPLE TO ENTER ONLY THE FIRST FLOOR OF THE NEW TWO STORY BUILDING, AND THE MEETING ROOM. THERE IS ANOTHER ACCESS RAMP THAT LEADS TO A NON ACCESSIBLE ENTRANCE INTO THE LIBRARY. THE CAMPUS IS FILLED WITH NUMEROUS LEVEL CHANGES. ALSO, VEHICULAR TRAFFIC AND PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC USE THE SAME PATHS CU RRENTLY, WHICH IS NOT IDEAL FOR A SITE THAT MANY SMALL CHILDREN USE. MEETING ROOM FORECOURT + TERRACE AREA BREEZEWAY

GENERAL PROJECT FACTORS + ISSUES PHASING [2-3 PHASES] SINCE THE CLIENTS ARE RELYING SOLEY ON FUNDRAISING TO FINANCE TH IS PROJECT, THE MONEY WILL BE RECIEVED IN STAGES. THE PROJECT WILL HAVE TO BE DESIGNED IN TWO OR THREE PHASES. THE PHASES WILL HAVE TO BE SCHEDULED FROM MARCH TO EARLY SEPTEMBER, TO MINIMIZE CONSTRUCTION DISTRACTIONS AND CLASSROOM DISPLACEMENTS. BUDGET THE BUDGET FOR THIS PROJECT IS EXTREMELY LOW. REUSING BUILDING MATERIALS IS IMPORTAN T TO THE CLIENT, THE MORE THAT IS SAVED AN D REUSED, THE LOWER THE COST, AND THE MORE LIKELY THE PROJECT WILL BE BUIL T. ALSO, USING COMMON AND READILY AVAILABLE MATERIALS THAT ARE FREQUENTLY USED IN THE AREA WILL HELP SAVE ON LABOR COSTS. BY DESIGNING AROUND TYPI CAL CONSTRUCTION DIMENSIONS, LUMBER CAN BE USED EFFICIENTLY, AND WASTE MINIMIZE D, THEREBY ENSURING MONEY IS BEING USED WISELY. GROWTH POTENTIAL OF THE SCHOOL THE SCHOOL HAS EXPERIENCED CONTINUOUS GROWTH OVER THE PAST 50 YEARS, A TREND THAT WILL ONLY INCREASE SINCE IT HAS RECENTLY PERM ITTED ENROLLMENT OF NON-QUAKER STUDENTS. CLASSROOMS MUST BE DESIGNED WITH ADDITIONAL SPACE SET ASIDE FO R INCOMING STUDENTS IN THE NE AR FUTURE. THE FORMER METHOD OF DESIGNING FOR THEIR CURRENT NEED S WITH LITTLE ROOM FOR EXPANSION HAS PROVEN UNSUCCESSFUL. FOR INSTANCE, IN THE CASE OF THEIR NEWEST TWO STORY BUILDING, MOST OF THE ROOMS ARE BEING CONSIDERED FOR REPROGRAMMING DUE TO SPACE CONSTRAINTS. INCREASE UNIVERSAL ACCESSIBILITY THE CLIENTS EXPRESSED A DESIRE FOR THE CAMPUS TO BE UNIVERSALLY FRIENDLY, BUT NOT NECESSARILY UNIVERSALLY ACCESSABLE. THIS IS PROBLEMATIC BECAUSE MAJOR RENOVATIONS WILL HAVE TO BE MADE TO AC COMMODATE DISABLED PERSONS. DESPI TE HAVING TWO RAMPS, ONLY THE FIRST OF THE TWO STORY BUILDING, AND THE M EETING ROOM ARE ACCESSIBLE. WITH A FEW SIMP LE LANDSCAPING MOVES, THE FIRST FLOOR OF THE ENITIRE CAMPUS COULD BE ACCESSIBLE. WEATHER CONDITIONS THE STRONG WINDS, RAIN AND HORIZONATAL MI ST CARRIED FROM THE DIRECTION OF THE SOCCER FIELD AND PLAYGROUND POUND THE NORTH FACING WALLS AND WINDOWS AND DO SIGNIFCANT DAMAGE AND CAUSE MAJO R LEAKS. ENTRANCES THAT ARE NOT PROTECTED IN THIS AREA ARE NORMALLY WET AND WINDY. THE STRONG RAIN CREATES LOUD NOISE POLLUTION AGAINST THE METAL ROOF. THE BREEZEWAY BETWEEN THE TWO STORY BUILDING AND THE KINDER BUILDING BECOMES A STRONG WIND TU NNEL CHANNELING ALL THE BREEZE POWERFULLY INTO THE FORECOURT. I N THE DRY SEASON, THE OPPOSITE PROBLEM OF DRY, HOT STANDING AIR IS PRESENT. BELOW THE FIBERGLASS SKYLIGHTS, INTERIOR SPACES BECO ME HOT WHEN IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT. HUMIDITY CAN DAMAGE EQUIPEMENT AND BOOK S WHEN CEILING HEIGHTS ARE NOT SUFFICIENT ENOUGH, OR ROOMS DO NOT HAVE SUFFIEICIENT VENTILATION.

INITIAL RESEARCH MONTESSORI TEACHING METHODS THE MONTEVERDE FRIENDS SCHOOL TEACHES THROUGH LESSONS THAT CONTINUE TO GROW AND DEVELOP THROUGHOUT LIFE. THE SCHOOL IS RUN WITH THE MONTESSORI TEACHING METHOD. CHILDREN LEARN AND TEACH THEMSELVES AT THEIR OWN PACE WITH THE TEACHER ACTING ONLY AS A GUIDE, FOCUSING ON QUALITY, RATHER THAN Q UANTITY. SPECIAL EQUIPM ENT THAT RANGES IN COMPLEXITY IS USED TO HELP THE CHILDS DEVELOPMENT. EARLY LEARNING IS TAUGHT THROUGH THE SENSES, BY ISOLATING WHAT IS TAUGHT, THE CHIL D CAN MORE EASILY FOCUS ON IT. STUDENTS OF MANY DIFFERENT AGES ARE GROUPED TOGETHER TO LEARN FROM EACH OTHER. THE IDEA IS THAT EDUCATION IS NOT ONLY INTELLECTUAL, BUT ALSO PHYSICAL, SOCIAL AND SPIRITUAL. MAINLY, ONLY THE KINDERGARTEN CLASS USES THE MONTESSORI METHOD, THOUGH IT IS INTERGRATED SOMEWHAT INTO ALL GRADE LEVELS. ADA GUIDELINES + TYPICAL DIMENSIONS WHILE THE CLIENT EXPRESSED THAT THEY DID NOT REQUIRE A UNIVERSALLY ACCESSIBLE DESIGN, THEY DID MENTION THAT THEY WOULD LIKE A UNIVERSALLY F RIENDLY DESIGN. WITH THIS IN MIND, THERE WERE A FEW STANDARDS THAT WERE FOLLOWED TO MAKE THE DESIGNS MORE USABLE BY DISABLED INDIVIDUALS. MOST IMPORTANTLY WAS FOLLOWING THE MAXIMUM RAMP SLOPE OF 1:12 FOR ANY SPACE THAT HAD A VERTICAL DIFFERENTIATION, WITH A 760 X 1220 MM CLEAR APPROACH AND LANDING AREA. THE NEXT MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT WAS ABIDING BY THE MINIMUM WIDTH OF 915 MM FOR ANY RAMP OR HALLWAY, AND 815 MM MINIMUM WIDTH FOR ALL DOORWAYS. ALSO, A 1525 MM CLEAR TURNING AREA WAS INCORPORATED IN TO ALL OF THE BATHROOMS IN THE SEPARATE DESIGNS TO ALLOW FOR WHEELCHAIR ACCESS. WITH IN THE KINDER CLASSROOM AREA, A WINDOW SILL HEIGHT OF 457-610 MM HEIGHT FROM FLOOR AND LOWERED SINKS WERE ALSO IMPLEMENTED TO FOLLOW STANDARD BUILDING PRACTICES.

TYPICAL CONSTRUCTION METHODS OF COSTA RICA MANY DIVERSE CONSTRUCTION METHODS ARE PREVALENT IN COSTA RICA INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, TRADITIONAL WOOD/ALUMINUM STUD FRAMING, HEAVY TIMB ER FRAMING, STEEL CONSTRUCTION, POURED CONCRETE, AND REINFORCED CONCRETE BLOCK. TH E INTERIORS OF MANY SMALL COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL BUILDING S FEATURE WOODEN, OPEN-BEAM CEILINGS AND MOST ROOF SYSTEMS ARE COMPRISED SOLELY OF THIN, OVERLAPPING, CORRUGATED METAL PANELS, ALTHOUGH HEAVIER AND COSTLIER SLATE, CLAY, AND FIBER-CEMENT COMPOSITE ROOF MATERIALS ARE ALSO AVAILABLE AND OFFER EXCELLENT DURABILITY. COSTA RICA OFFERS A WIDE-VARIETY OF LOCAL HARDWOODS INCLUDING LAUREL, CENIZARO, GUANACASTE, POCHOTE, TEAK, BAMBOO, MELINA AND OTHERS; HOWEVER, RESEARCH SHOULD BE UNDERTAKEN WHEN SELECTING A SUPPLIER TO ENSU RE THAT SUSTAINABLE HARVESTING PRACTICES ARE USED TO PREVENT DEFORESTATION. THE DOWNSIDE IS THAT TYPICAL WOODEN STRUCTURES HAVE A LIMITED LIFESPAN DUE TO HUMIDITY AND TERMITES. TEAK AND MELINA HAVE BEEN NOTED FOR THEIR STRENGTH COMBINED WITH ABILITY TO BE TREATED /PRESERVED WITHOUT THE USE OF PESTICIDES OR TOXIC CHEMICALS. WHEN CONSIDERING THE SIGNIFI CANT INCREASE IN THE LIFESPAN OF THE BUILDING, CONCRETE CAN BE CONSIDERED A MORE SUSTAINABLE OPTION (DES PITE THE HIGHER INITIAL EMBODIED ENERGY). ADDITIONALLY, CONCRETE STRUCTURES ARE NON-TOXIC, MUCH MORE EASILY MAINTAINED, STRONGER/MORE DURABLE, AND PR OVIDE LESS NOOKS FOR INSECTS TO INHABIT. CONCRETE BLOCK STRUCTURES ARE TYPICALLY FACED WITH STUCCO, WH ICH IS LESS TOXIC, AND MORE DURABLE THAN PAINT. FIBER-CEMENT PANELS ARE ANOTHER COMMON SIDING MATERIAL. THIS MATERIAL REQUIRES NO ADDITIONAL FINISH, IS VERY DUR ABLE, AND READILY AVAILABLE. LIKEWISE, THE EMBODIED ENERGY OF STEEL AND ALUMINUM FRAMING, SIDING, AND/OR ROOFING MATERIALS ARE INITIALLY VERY HIGH, BUT THE FACT THAT THEY OFFER A VERY LONG LIFESPAN AND THAT THEY CONTAIN HIGH PERCENTAGES OF RECYCL ED CONTENT (UP TO 100% IN MANY ALUMINUM PRODUCTS) MAKES THEM ATTRACTIVE AS A SUST AINABLE APPROACH TO CONSTRUCTION IN THE COSTA RICAN CLIMATE. ANOTHER ADVANTAGE IS THAT THESE METAL PRODUCTS ARE LIGHTWEIGHT AND THEREFORE REQUIRE LESS STRUCTUR E TO SUPPORT THEIR LOADS. WHEN CONSIDERING MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION METHODS IN COSTA RICA, THE DESIGNER MUST BE COGNIZANT OF THE SKILL AND EXPERIENCE LEVEL OF LOCAL CONSTRUCTION TRADESMEN BEFORE NEW PRODUCTS OR UNIQUE INSTALLATION METHODS ARE SELECTED.

THE ADVANTAGE OF REORGANIZING THE CAMPUS IS THE SEPERATION OF FUNCTIONAL AREAS TO CREATE A MORE COHESIVE CAMPUS PLAN. IN THE REPROGRAM, ALL OF THE CLASSROOMS ARE LOCATED IN TWO BU ILDINGS, SEPARATED FROM THE NON-EDUCATIONAL USES. THE OFFICES, TEACHERS LOUNGE, SECURITY APARTMENT, COMPUTER LAB, AND THE MEETING ROOM BENEFIT ACOUSTICALLY FROM ISOLATING CLASSROOMS. SINCE THE SCHOOL IS BASED ON A THEORY OF OLDER CH ILDREN AND YOUNGER CHILDREN WORKING TOGETHER, HAVING ALL CHILDREN IN THE SAME AREA PHYSICALLY PROMOTES THE PEDAGOGY. THE CURRENT CAMPUS HAS EXPERIENCED A CONSTANT RESHUFFLING OF ROOMS. FOR EXAMPLE, THE NEWEST BUILDING AT THE SCHOOL IS LESS THA N 10 YEARS OLD AND IS ALREADY BEING REPROGRAMED TO ACCOMMODATE THE GROWTH IN THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS AND EQUIPMENT. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THERE ARE TOO MANY SMALL ROOMS THAT CANNOT HANDLE ANY GR OWTH. GROWTH AND CHANGE ARE INEVITABLE AND PLANNING ROOMS THAT ARE OPEN AND LARGE ACCOMMODATE EXPANSION EASLILY. CHOPPING A PLAN INTO SMALL DIVIDED AREAS EVENTUALLY MEANS THAT WALLS WILL HAVE TO COME DOWN AND ENTRANCES WILL HAVE TO BE RELOCATED. THIS CAN BECOME COSTLY AN D FRUSTRATING, ESPECIALLY AFTER USING THE BUILDING LESS THAN TEN YEARS. THE CHART BELOW SHOWS THE PROGRAM SPACES AND THE RESULTS OF THE REORGANIZATION ON THEIR SIZE. THE MAIN ISSUES ARE SHARED VEHICULAR AND PEDESTRIAN SPACES AND A LARGE AMOUNT OF STAIRS. REROUTING THE PEDESTRIAN PATHS CONNECTING THE CAMPUS AND THE ROAD THROUGH THE WOODS WOULD HELP KEEP PEDESTRIAN S AWAY FROM CARS AND MAKE THE WALK TO SCHOOL SAFER FOR CHILDREN. THIS CHANGE WOULD BE EASILY ACCOMPLISHED AS THERE IS ALREADY AN EXISTING PATH THROUGH THE WOODS (PASSING BY THE FIRE PIT) AND THE ON LY WORK NEEDED IS THE REMOVAL OF A FEW FALLEN BRANCHES. THIS PATH COUL D EMERGE ON THE SOUTH END OF THE QUAD AND SPLIT, THE EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF STAIRS LEADING UP TOWARDS THE TWO-STORY BUILDING IS UNNECESSARY. HAVING THE NEW BUILDING ON THE KINDERGARTEN AND SHOP SITE AT THE SAME LEVEL AS THE PATIO LEADING TO THE OFFICES, MULTIPURPOSE ROOM AND THE MEETING ROOM WOULD MAKE ACCESS TO BOTH OF THESE BUILDINGS ACCESSIBLE VIA A SINGLE RAMP. THIS WOULD INCREASE ACCESSIBILITY WHILE ALSO REMOVING THE AWKWARD COMBINATION OF STEPS AND RAMPS EX ISTING BETWEEN THE OFFICES AND KINDER BUILDING. THIS SIDEWALK COULD LEAD TO A PATIO AREA BEHIND THE MEETINGHOUSE THAT COULD BE AN OUTDOOR EXTENSION OF THE MULTIPURPOSE ROOM WHILE ALSO MAKING USE OF EXISTING DOORWAYS THAT ARE CURRENTLY UNUSED. THE PLACEMENT OF PICNIC TABLES IN THIS AREA WOULD INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF USEABLE SPACE WHILE ALSO FURTHER INTEGRATING THE CAMPUS WITH THE OU TDOOR RECREATION AREAS BEHIND IT. A WALL, PERHAPS SIMILAR TO THE EXISTING JAPANESE ARCHITECTURE INSPIRED WALL NEAR THE THIRD GRADE ROOM, AND THE USE OF SHRUBS OR VINES COULD PROTECT THIS PATIO AND THE MEETING HOUSE FROM THE WIND WHILE ALSO BLOCKING VIEWS OF TH E WOOD SHED THE GNARL ED DEAD TREE IN THI S AREA

SOCCER FIELD MODIFICATIONS THE SOCCER FIELD INCREASES RUNOFF TOWARDS THE CAMPUS WHILE ALSO LEAVING THE BUILDINGS EXPOSED TO WIND AND RAIN. BOTH OF THESE SHORTEN THE LIFESPAN OF BUILDING WALLS AND FOUNDATIONS WHILE ALSO MAKING THE CAMPUS UNCOMFORTABLE DUE TO RUNNING SHEETS OF WATER AND HI GH WINDS. HAVING TWO TERRACES, THE TOPMOST FOR THE SOCCER FIELD, AND THE SECOND CO NTAINING VEGETATION, WO ULD HELP CONTROL WATER RUNOFF WHILE ALSO LEVELING THE SOCCER FIELD. THE SPACE ON THE MIDDLE TERRACE WOULD BE A GOOD LOCATION FOR AN EXTENSION OF THE V EGETABLE GARDEN OR ORNAMENTAL PLANTS, BOTH OF WHICH COULD BE NATURALLY IRRIGATED THROUGH GRAVITY WHILE ALSO SLOWING DOWN THE VELOCITY OF STORM WATER RUNOFF. EACH RETAINING WALL WOULD BE APPROXIMATELY A HA LF-METER AT ITS HIGHEST POINT, WHICH IS NOT TALL ENOUGH TO B LOCK VIEWS FROM SCHOOL BUILDINGS TO THE SOCCER FIELD. RE-GRADING THE SI TE TO DIRECT WATER FLOW FROM EAST TO WEST IN SWALES WOULD ALS O HELP MOVE WATER AWAY FROM THE BUILDINGS. THE USE OF WIDE, SHALLOW SWALES ON BOTH SIDES OF THE SWING SET WOULD BE MORE EFFECTIVE THAN THE USE OF NARROW CHANNELS AND DRAINAGE PIPES. THE CHANNELIZATION OF WATER RESULTS IN ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE TO THE SURROUNDING FORES T BY INCREASING THE VELOCITY OF WATER THEREBY CAUSI NG EROSION AND NUTRIENT LOSS IN THE SOIL A SCREEN OF TREES BETWEEN THE SWING SET AND THE GARDEN TERRACE WOULD ALSO HELP SLOW DOWN WATER RUNOFF WHILE ALSO PROVIDING A WINDSCREEN FOR THE BUILDINGS. A COMMON TREE USED FOR WINDBREAKS IN COSTA RICA IS MONTANOA G UATEMALENSIS, ALSO KNOW BY ITS COMMON NAME OF TUB. THIS TREE MAKES A GOOD WINDBREAK BECAUSE IT IS NATURALLY FOUND ALONG WINDY RIDGE TOPS. IT IS REC OGNIZABLE BECAUSE OF ITS LARGE, DAISY-LIKE FLOWERS THEREBY MAKIN G IT FUNCTIONAL AND A BENEFICIAL AESTHETIC ADDITION. THE ADDITION OF A TREE SCREEN WOULD PROTECT THE BUILDINGS WHILE STILL ALLOWING FOR LINE OF SITE FROM THE SCHOOL BUILDINGS TO THE SOCCE R FIELD. WHILE THE TREES ARE YOUNG, THEY WI LL BE TOO THIN TO O BSTRUCT THE VIEW. WHEN THEY ARE MATURE, THE BOTTOM OF THE CANOPY WILL BE HIGH ENOUGH SO THAT PEOPLE CAN LOOK UNDER THEM AND SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING ON THE SOCCER FIELD.

NATURALLY TREATING GREY WATER WITH REED BEDS IS AN ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY METHOD OF CLEANING DIRTY WATER BEFORE RELEASING IT BACK INTO THE ENVIRONMENT. MOST MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY ARE ALREADY FAMILIAR WITH THE EXIS TING REED BED IN FRONT OF THE MULTI PURPO SE ROOM. THIS REED BED HAS BEEN SLIGHTLY PROBLEMATIC FOR THE COMMUNITY BECAUSE OF OCCASIONAL ODOR ISSUES, ESPECIALLY AFTER LARGE E VENTS. TERRACING THE SINGLE REED BED INTO SMALLER, FLATTER VERSIONS WOULD HELP FIX THE SYSTEM. BECAUSE OF THE SLOPE OF THE REED BED, T HE WATER IS DRAINING OUT OF THE LOW SIDE BEFORE BEING CLEANED BY THE ROOT SYSTEMS OF THE REEDS (COIX LACRYMA-JOBI). INSTALLING A VERTICAL TUBE THAT COULD BE USED TO CHECK WATER LEVELS AND SEDIMENTATION WITHIN TH E REED BED WOULD ALSO HELP MAKE MAINTENANCE EASIER. AN ADDITIONA L REED BED SYSTEM COULD ALSO BE PUT BETWEEN THE CURRENT SHOP AND LIBRARY TO TREAT GREY WATER FROM THE NEW BUILDING. TWO REED BEDS RUNNING EAST-WEST, WITH A PATH BETWEEN THEM WOULD BE A GOOD, LEVEL LOCATION TO TREAT GREY WATER BEFORE RELEASING IT INTO THE FOREST. A PATH BETWEEN THESE REED BEDS COULD ALSO HELP INCORPORATE THE FOREST WITH THE QUAD AREA.
