HOLTON Sentinel City Editor On Thursday, members of City Council approved the in crease of recreational programs held at parks. The fee requests are a result of budget cuts. The fee increase was passed as a resolution and no public hear ings will be held. However, council members voted to re move a clause from the resolu tion that allows the administration to make deci sions concerning the fees with out consulting council members. Ms. Karen Palus, Director of Parks and Recreation stated a stipulation restricts fee in creasing from exceeding 5%. She also stated that fees had not been Taised .for several years We have established fees at a sliding scale and folks who can not pay will not be turned away We also have partners and in vestors to help. The alternative is closing the facilities and layoff the employees," she said. Chairman Thomas Scott said, "All I know is it's money coming out of people's pockets. We are raising fees that have in the history of the city and county have never been raised before." He further stated that by leav ing the resolution as it stood took away the council power. You're giving your legislative power away and once you do, there is no way to regain it Councilman Charlie Miranda said, "If it was not for the media, we wouldn't have known about it and wouldn't be discussing it." Councilwoman Mary Mulhern suggested that the resolution be modified so that council members would have an opportunity to approve in creases. Her motion.. was passed The increase affects all pro grams offered by the parks and recreation department. After school care will change from $12 a year to $25 per week; and summer programs, which now cost $44 for the entire summer, will cost $55 dollars per week Ms. Palus stated the city in tends to use Federal Guidelines to determine sliding scale fees. She also said there are multiple discounts available for families with more than one child. GOLD CHECKING You _t:om a bank More convenience. They get no special recognition, and very little appreciation. }< c.. c !< w .... BY LEON B. CREWS Sentinel StaffWriter As a 12-year-old growing up in Central Park Village, Marion Jones, like other young girls, could usually found on her front porch doing someone's hair. At that time, all she had was a few hot combs and straightening combs. Taking the advice of friends and family, Ms. _Jones enrolled as a student at the Sunlight Beauty School on Nebraska Avenue, where Ms. Willie Roberson was her instructor I got my first job at Lucille Singleton s S a lon on Central Avenue That was so years ago, and I'm still doing hair." "I never thought I'd be doing hair this long. Over the years, I've developed arthritis in my fingers, but I keep going. I'm very thankful that I've been able to keep going this long. The Lord has blessed me." Over the years, Ms. Jones said she's met some wonder ful people, especially profes-MARION JONES sionals and celebrities "Back then, men would come in to get their hair done. Central Avenue was the place to be back then and if you were important or a big celebrity, someone would bump into you Central Avenue." "When I was a little girl doing hair, I'd do hair for women who lived in Central Park and charged only so c2Ets. It was called boot legging, and so cents was a lot of money back then." Over thP re?.rs, Ms. Jones has owned a salon, Superior on Tampa Street, and now she's at B' Elegant Salon on 34th Street and 26th Avenue. "I don't know how long I'll keep it up, but as long as my health is good, I'll keep going." "A lot of people speak to me when I'm out, because they remember when I did their hair years ago. I don't remember them all, but it feels good they remember me." Ms. Jones said if there's one person she owes a lot of gratitude to, it' s Ruby Mack. "She was my mentor and did my hair. She had a great influence on me. She really impressed me when she did my hair and in those days, they didn't use chemicals." "Ms, Mack is the reason I wanted to do this as a profes sional. She's the one who let me see just how great it was .to meet so many people and learn so much." First Mt. Carmel AME Church pastor, Rev. Frankie S. Fayson, III, wants to end that. On AuguSt 9th in a 4 p.m. special service at his church, 4406 North 26th Street, sani tation workers for the city and county will be honored. "I've been planning this for a year," said Rev. Fayson. "These people have a unique job and work_in all weather conditions." Rev. Fayson recalled one of his church members saying his son told him he wanted to be a gar):>age man, go to church, and take care of his family. "That young man realized how important the job of sani tation workers is." "I had also heard a story about a city laying off some people, and sanitation work ers were at the top of the list. The fallout was horrible, health wise, and I don't want to see that happen here." Mrs. Donna Wright is chairperson for the event, and Mrs. LaKay J:ayson is co-REV. Local MICHELLE WILLIAMS Every summer, community organizations and business leaders ask for donations to provide free school supplies for students. With the economy suffering the past 4 years, the donation of school sup plies has decreased dramati cally, causing people to spend their own money to provide the supplies for the students. A local organization, The Sons and Daughters of Harriett Tubman and the organization's president, Michelle Williams, decided to pitch in this year to offer free supplies with a pro ject called "Operation School Supplies." "We started tinkering with the idea some time ago," said Ms. Williams. "I know others are doing this, but every little bit helps. Everyone pitched in and donated supplies to make this possible, and we owe them all a debt of gratitude." On Saturday, August 1st, free school supplies will be available at 1409 East 7th Avenue in Ybor City begin ning at 2 p.m. and ending when everything is gone. Ms. Williams said regard less of the weather, they will be there for the children. "We will also offer a free meal to the parents who will be standing in line waiting with their children. All of this is due to the overwhelming support we've gotten from area businesses and organizations. When you come Saturday, just look for the huge banner." For more information on the "Operation Supplies," call (813) 401-4103. Reporter Leon B. Crews can be reached at (813) 248-0724, or e-mailed at lcrews@Osentinel.com. The 39-year-old quarterback told coach Brad Childress on Tuesday that he won't come out of retire-ment to play for the Vikings. favre's decision, which was first reported by the Star Tribune of Minneapolis, is a stunner for the Vikings after they openly courted the quarterback all summer. Adding Favre would have been viewed by many as the final piece for a team that already has star running back Adrian Peterson and a stingy veteran defense that returns nearly intact from last season's NFC North championship squad "It was a rare and unique opportunity to consider adding not only a future Hall of Fame quarterback buf one that is very familiar with our system and division," Childress said in a prepared statement released by the team. "That does not detract from the team that we have." Court records show charges of aggravated battery were reduced Tuesday to the mis demeanor of culpable negli gence. The original charge carried a possible prison sen tence of five years, but misdemeanors usually do not result in jail time. Miami Beach police say Starks was driving a large truck packed with people along Ocean Drive last Memorial Day weekend when an officer walked up alongside. Starks allegedly swerved slightly, striking the officer and pinning him against another vehicle. The officer was not hurt. The 38-year-old former two-division champion, who gained notoriety when he became the first boxer to defeat Shane Mosley, was killed night. Police recovered Forrest's gun and one shell casing belonging to that gun, he said. was putting air in his car tires at a gas station when a man asked for money, his manager Charles Watson said. When he pulled his wallet out, the man snatched it and started run ning, and Forrest took off after him, Watson said. Snyder told Campbell he wants him to become a franchise quarterback, Campbell recalled Monday, but he has not reached that level yet in Snyder's opinion. Spurred by Snyde.-'s assessment of him, Campbell took more initiative in setting the agenda for offseason workouts. He personally contacted receivers to participate in throwing ses sions at Redskins Park and, in some cases, admonished play ers for lacking focus, many in the organization said.
