After being unemployed sporadically for more than two years, Latecia decided she would go back to school to get a Master's degree at a local For-Profit institution. Her best friend asked Latecia why she was returning to school. Latecia replied, "So I can get me a student loan to help pay some of these bills!" Within weeks, Latecia was accepted to Make-orBreak University. Soon after enrolling at MBU, Latecia began missing classes, leaving classes early or arriving late. In fact, she soon realized keeping up with her assignments was impossible. The outcome was predictable and payback was inevitable. Does Latecia's story sound familiar? According to one source, seemingly a large segment of adults like Latecia who attend local For-Profit colleges are using student loans and grants literally to put food on the table and to pay the rent. The problem is obvious. Many students like Latecia are ill-prepared for the requirements of class attendance and class assignments. Consequently, such students wrack up hefty student loans balances, mediocre grades and end up scamming the system as a means of survival. ..::t The public loses, too, because it must contend with poorly equipped For-Profit graduates who have used jf school merely as a meal ticket. The current system we are using has become so partisan and so divisive that it is get ting more and more difficult for governments to do the people's business. Parties and big corporations have become more important than the citizens they govern. The political s y stem is bro ken and in need of a political fix. The idea is to put all par ties on the ballot regardless of political party affiliation. V oters can cast one v ote for the ca ndidate of the i r choice. The top two systems should encourage more capable, qualified and decent people to seek these public offices. Candidates, in my view will spend more time discussing issues and less time on mud slinging and attack ads. This system has to be better than what our current system has degenerated into. Bi-partisanship has become so strong until it has ab solutely corrupted our gov ernment. It is so bad that the corruption is o vert and rampant.
