Haroon, Fatima Jumua.
[A fierce war between the Arabs and Massalit].
Refugee camp, Eastern Chad,
Pencil on graph paper.
In the drawing is Arabic text that translates to, "A fierce war between the Arabs and Massalit. A boy (holding a weapon). Houses are on fire. By: Fatima Jumua Haroon."
A drawing by a young Darfuri girl that depicts a fierce battle between the Janjaweed militia and the Masalit tribe of Darfur. Masalit men and boys had to arm themselves to fight off the invasion that included government soldiers in military tanks. Due to inferior weapons that the Masalit tribesmen had, these tribesmen were not able to withstand the combined Janjaweed and military offensive that left houses in entire villages burned to the ground.
