Biographical:
Camp Cuba Libre was established in Jacksonville, Florida in June 1898 at the beginning of the Spanish American War as the assembly point for the troops of General Fitzhugh Lee’s 7th Corps. At its peak, the camp housed 29,000 volunteer soldiers from throughout the nation. Due to the brevity of the war, the 7th Corps never reached Cuba; the volunteers dispersed after spending several months in Jacksonville. The camp was closed on January 11, 1899 after the last of the battalions were discharged from military service or transferred elsewhere.
