This collection consists of materials on language studies and linguistics, correspondence, notes, recommendation letters, pronunciation suggestions, miscellaneous rime studies, and research projects conducted at the University of Wisconsin.

Biographical:
With an interest in language and linguistics, Miles Laurence Hanley became an instructor at the University of Texas in 1919, moved to Harvard in 1923 to study and teach, then settled at the University of Wisconsin where he taught English. In 1933, while on a leave of absence, he taught at Yale and collaborated with Hans Kurath, Bernard Bloch, and Marcus Lee Hansen on the Linguistic Atlas of New England. He wrote many scientific articles, abstracts, and reviews related to language study. He also actively participated in the Works Projects Administration, the National Youth Administration, and other national organizations. He died in 1954.
