Biographical:
This collection consists of materials gathered by the University of South Florida (USF) Department of Anthropology to support its African Americans in Florida research project (1993 -- 1994). The project - which included a study of Central Avenue, Tampa's historic, African American business district - led to a number of public events and activities beginning in October 1994. The project was funded by the Florida Humanities Council, with additional support provided by the Tampa Bay History Center. USF Professors Susan Greenbaum and Cheryl Rodriguez contributed significantly to the project, along with former USF Anthropology student Geoffrey Mohlman, independent researcher Beverly Ward, and Ginger Barber. The majority of materials compiled for the project originally were created by and collected for the Black History of Tampa Project (1977 -- 1978), a collaboration of the Tampa Urban League and the Hillsborough County Museum. A federally-funded initiative sponsored by the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA), Project was directed by Otis Anthony. Other members of the Project included Herbert Jones, Fred Beaton, Joyce Dyer, and Shirley Smith.

This collection consists of materials gathered by the University of South Florida (USF) Department of Anthropology to support its African Americans in Florida research project (1993 -- 1994). The project which included a study of Central Avenue, Tampa's historic, African American business district led to a number of public events and activities beginning in October 1994.
