Biographical:
Rex Maniscalco was a gay photographer who photographed events of the GLBT community in Tampa. He was an active member of GLBTA Democratic Caucus and the GaYBOR District Coalition. Before his death in April of 2009 he alluded to the Rainbow in Sunshine Project to preserve the history of the Tampa GLBT community. It is possible that his collection of Bobbie Smith photographs were part of this effort. Bobbie Smith was born in Tampa in 1923. During World War II Bobbie worked as a Western Union delivery boy. Between the years of 1948-1989 Bobbie Smith was employed by Southern Photo & News. She wore men’s clothing and had one run-in with the police – she was allegedly dating a policeman’s girlfriend – during which she was asked to remove her clothing to prove that she was a female. Bobbie agreed to this demand but only in front of a female police officer. Bobby was dating Mary VanderWall from 1948-1959. Then met her partner Kay in 1959 and they founded the Metropolitan Community Church (MCC), an interdenominational Christian church, in Tampa during the 1960s. Many of Bobbie’s photos were taken at a gay bar on Madeira Beach called Jack’s Place; a nudist camp called the Sunshine Beach club in Lutz, Florida where Bobbies uncle worked; the Knotty Pine, a gay bar in downtown Tampa; and Jimmy White’s Tavern.
