Biographical:
Formerly known as the Old People’s Home, the Home Association is one of Hillsborough County’s oldest private non-profit social service organizations. It was founded in 1899 when three elderly Jacksonville women were trapped in Tampa without funds by a yellow fever quarantine.  Responding to this need, several Tampa women organized to provide housing and an attendant for the women.  From this effort sprang a home for women in need of assistance known as “Kadesh Barnea,” or “Place of Rest.”  In its early days, the Home provided a safe refuge not only for elderly women, but for traveling business women, victims of family strife, and even young runaways.  In 1915, however, the home became a full-fledged home for elderly persons of both sexes and adopted the name Old People’s Home. In 1972, the name was changed to the Home Association, Inc.  The Home Association donated the records of the organization to the USF Library on April 20, 1998.

Discharge Index, 1921-1995
Scope and Contents
Card file indexing residents discharged from the Home alphabetically by surname. The cards include all residents, temporary boarders as well as permanent residents, who left the home, whether by death, voluntary departure, or expulsion. Each card includes name, birth date [usually], date of entering Home, death date or date of leaving Home, and place of burial. Some cards may contain brief additional notes, such as funeral home used, hospital where death occurred, etc. Although the label on the file box indicates coverage from 1921 to 1995, the cards actually include information on residents discharged from the Home as early as 1900.

Formerly known as the Old Peoples Home, the Home Association is one of Hillsborough Countys oldest private non-profit social service organizations. It was founded in 1899 when three elderly Jacksonville women were trapped in Tampa without funds by a yellow fever quarantine.  Responding to this need, several Tampa women organized to provide housing and an attendant for the women.  From this effort sprang a home for women in need of assistance known as Kadesh Barnea, or Place of Rest.  In its early days, the Home provided a safe refuge not only for elderly women, but for traveling business women, victims of family strife, and even young runaways.  In 1915, however, the home became a full-fledged home for elderly persons of both sexes and adopted the name Old Peoples Home. In 1972, the name was changed to the Home Association, Inc.  The Home Association donated the records of the organization to the USF Library on April 20, 1998.
