Biographical:
Born in Racine, Wisconsin, David O. True graduated in 1909 from Colgate University in New York. He completed two years of post-graduate coursework at the University of Chicago, and became a stockbroker, business promoter, and later, the president of True, Webber and Company. A millionaire by the age of thirty, he lost his fortune during the Wall Street Crash of 1929. Afterwards, he devoted much of his time to research, writing, and editorial work, studying early maps of America and Florida. He was especially interested in the voyages of early explorers such as Giovanni da Verrazano, John and Sebastian Cabot, Pánfilo Narvaez, Ponce de León, and Hernando de Soto.  David True copiously collected map facsimiles, newspaper clippings, and correspondence from map librarians and dealers.  His research interests were varied, and also included such topics as space travel, communism, pirates, and UFOs.  He died in 1967.
Ownership:
David O. True left his collection of research materials to Marjorie Stoneman Douglas upon his death, intending his collection to eventually find a home within an academic institution. The collection was originally thought to have been donated to the University of Miami, but the collection was retired from the university when True's will was found. The collection was then housed in Marjorie Stoneman Douglas' Coconut Grove home, and on May 6, 1980, Douglas announced her gift of the David O. True Collection to the University of South Florida Libraries.
