Biographical:
Under the Florida Maritime Research Grant, the Hillsborough County Department of Museums began collecting information on Florida's rich maritime history, which includes commercial fishing, sponging, and shrimping in addition to shipwrecks, inland water transportation, and steamship lines. In 1979, the Hillsborough County Department of Museums shifted its focus from local history to science and industry.
Ownership:
Developed through the Florida Maritime Research Grant, PSE VI, and administered by the Hillsborough County Department of Museums, the materials in this collection were transferred to the University of South Florida Department of Special Collections by the Hillsborough County Department of Museums. Due to a shift in focus within the Hillsborough County Department of Museums from history to science and industry, the decision was made to place these materials where they would be more in keeping with their subject matter and more accessible for public use.
