The collection contains photos that were taken by Sam Mase on MacDill Field (Today known as MacDill Air Force Base) during World War II and personal photos and correspondence of Sam Mase from 1941-1965.

Biographical:
Samuel Louis Mase (1915-1970) was employed by iThe Sharon Herald /i(Penn.) when he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in March of 1941, and was assigned to MacDill Field where he spent five years in service. Mase started the first newspaper, iMacDill Fly Leaf/i, at MacDill, where he was assigned to public relations. During the course of service at MacDill, he headed a three-man staff which published a quarterly magazine called iThunderbird./i Mase was awarded the Army Commendation Ribbon for his work in conceiving and publishing iThunderbird/is. After discharge from the U.S. Army Air Force on January 9, 1946, Mase joined the staff of iThe Tampa Times/i, iThe Tampa Tribune, /iand iThe St. Petersburg Times /ias a state-wide roving investigative reporter.
