Scope and Content:
The collection is comprised of documents, photographs and artifacts relating to Angle's life, particularly his career in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve and his service as U.S. Customs Collector for Florida.  Included are transcripts of oral history interviews with Mr. Angle conducted by the USF Oral History Program in 1998. Also present is material relating to Mr. Angle's father, Allie Jay Angle, business man, citrus grower, Florida legislator, and U.S. Customs Collector for Florida (1933-1949).  Most of the A. J. Angle material present deals with his Customs service.  The collection also includes A. Bayard Angle's extensive files of genealogical research material relating to the Angle/Angel family and related lines.

Biographical:
Allie Bayard Angle (1908-2003) was the son of Allie Jay Angle (1879-1949) and Viva Mitchell Angle (d. 1913). Born in Bartow, Florida on October 1, 1908, Angle died in Seminole, Florida on April 16, 2003 at the age of 94. A successful attorney, citrus grower and real estate developer, Angle was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1933 and was a founding member of the Hillsborough County Bar Association, practicing law in Tampa for many years. During World War II, he was an officer in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve, serving in Florida, California and the South Pacific. In 1961, Angle was appointed U.S. Customs Collector for Florida, with headquarters in Tampa. He was the owner of Angle Groves, and served as president of the Lakeland Highland Citrus Cooperative Association 1971-1977. He was married to Lillian Elbon (d. 1996). In 1999, A. Bayard Angle became the USF Tampa Library’s largest benefactor with his gift of $3 million. He had embraced the motto: iNot everyone can afford to go to college, but everyone can afford to go to a library. /i
