Biographical:
The Business and Professional Women's Club of Tampa was organized in 1919 and was the first professional association for working women in the city's history. The Tampa Club was one of the first business women's associations to affiliate with the National Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs, receiving its charter in January 1920. For the next 67 years, the Tampa BPW worked to increase opportunities for equal participation by women in the economic and political life of the city, state, and nation. Among other activities, it awarded educational scholarships to young Tampa women, raised funds for organizations like the Girl's Club of Tampa, and actively supported the establishment of BPW scholarship houses at Florida State University and the University of Central Florida. A history of the Tampa charter compiled for its golden anniversary celebration in 1969 documented 50 years of accomplishments. By 1987 however, the Club's membership had dwindled to a small group of aging members. In May of that year, the Business and Professional Women's Club of Tampa surrendered its charter and ceased to exist, leaving its legacy to the younger, more active chapters that had sprung up throughout Hillsborough County. The minutes, programs, correspondence and other papers documenting the history of the Club were given to the USF Library for permanent preservation as part of Tampa's historical heritage.
