Biographical:
Bartley Gay (1906-1997) began his career in the hotel industry as a bellman at the Floridian Hotel and the Tampa Terrace Hotel, a year after he moved to Tampa in 1932. By 1942, he took military leave to serve as an officer in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps in Richmond, Virginia, and was deployed to the Philippines and Japan as part of the occupation forces. He returned to Tampa in 1946 to become Assistant Manager at the Tampa Terrace Hotel and was promoted to Executive Manager a year later. He remained at the Tampa Terrace Hotel until its impending sale to the Michel Group and his termination in 1964. The building was later demolished after it was returned to the possession of the Corral family. In 1966, Gay was appointed as Receiver to operate the Floridan Motor Hotel (under court supervision on behalf of Penn Mutual Insurance Company). The sale of the Floridan was the result of a mortgage foreclosure again the owners, the Paul H. Smith family. Gay was made manager of the hotel during the five year litigation proceedings and continued to operate the business while the case was being settled. Bartley Gay was active in the community and served as president to the Tampa Hotel Association, director of the Florida State Hotel and Motel Association, and as a member of the Mayor’s Biracial Committee. He died on January 14, 1997 at the age of ninety.
