Biographical:
Born in Escalante, Santanter, Spain, December 8, 1842, Ignacio Haya originally moved to New York, where he built a cigar factory with partner, Serafin Sanchez. After visiting the Tampa Bay area at the urging of Gavino Gutierrez, Haya and Sanchez moved their factory to Tampa, along with Vicente Martinez Ybor, to escape unionizing forces in New York and to take advantage of Tampa's warm, humid climate. Haya married Fannie Milledor in 1874. In addition to establishing the cigar industry in Tampa, Haya was instrumental in the creation of the Centro Español, a mutual aid society for Spanish immigrants, donating land and serving as the club’s first president. Sanchez and Haya also created the Sanchez and Haya Real Estate Company in 1895 which was finally dissolved in 1935 following the death of Fannie Haya Sierra, Ignacio Haya’s widow.
