Biographical:
Founded in 1904 by the leading business and professional men of the city of Tampa, the club followed the earliest yacht clubs, which had begun in the Netherlands in the 17th century during the exile of Charles II. When Charles II returned to England following the defeat of Oliver Cromwell, the idea of racing sailboats quickly took hold. The original land for the Tampa Yacht & Country Club was deeded to Peter O. Knight by Mr. and Mrs. Chester Chapin on September 20, 1894. The land was later conveyed to the Tampa Yacht & Country Club on June 14, 1910 to be used for "Yachting and club purposes."
