APPENDIX A Introduction This appendix is a collection of various tables and graphs which outline the ridership patterns associated with the Manatee County Transit System. This information is used to evaluate current services and identify possible changes to improve services or p r ovide operating economies. The data used in the analyses are for the 1989 Fiscal Year (October, 1988--September, 1989). In the graphs, r idership for each route and the system tota l is presented by time-of-day, day-of-week, and mont h-o f-year. The tables consist of the data which were used to produce the graphics. All the data used in the analyses were provided by Manatee County Transit (MCT). The sources for the month-of-year ridership data were the Monthly Transit Revenue Summary Sheets The day-of-week and time-of-day. r id ership data came from five weeks' worth of randomly selec t ed Drivers' Logs. MCT also provided additio n al system data s uc h as total system ridership, vehicle miles of service, an d operating costs for t he years 1980-1989. Methodology The time-of-day ridership figures (Table 2) represent the average ho u rly volumes cal culated by averaging the route ridership data from the Drivers' Logs. Four Wednesday s and four Saturdays were averaged to represent time-of-day ridership trends. These time -of-day averages were totalled for each route to obtain an average wee kda y and Saturday system ridership total. The percent of each day's average route ridership was then calculated by dividing the average time-of-day ridership for each r oute by the average weekday or Saturday ridership total. The day-of-week ridership figures (Table 3) were calculated by averaging route data from the Drivers' Logs. A sample average service day" ridership was calculated for each route by dividing the 5-week time period total ridership for each route by t he number o f service days in the 5 week period (30 days). Thus, the average service day is a weighted average of weekday and Saturday ridership. The percent of annual ave r age service day r idership by route was then calculated by dividing the average ridership for each day of the week by the corresponding sample average service day ridership. Average weekday ridership by month (Table 4) was calcu l ated by dividing the total weekday ridership for each month (from the Revenue Summary S be ets) by the number of w eek days in each month. The total average weekday ridership per route was then calcu lated by dividing the total weekday ridership for the year for each route by the total number of weekdays in the year. The percen t of annual average ridership was calculated by dividing a route's monthly average weekday figures by the total average weekday ridership for th at route. These same calculations were used to analyze average Sarurday ridership. A-1
