Caption on back of photograph reads: "U.S. PRISONERS LIBERATED. One of the American prisoners at Nazi Stalag XXII-A stares uncomprehendingly into the darkness as he hears the news of his liberation. Fed only a bowl of thin soup and a piece of bread a day, hundreds of hospital cases lay on wooden beds for months at this camp. There was no heat. Americans who were not wounded slept on a straw-strewn floor.
