John Kunkel Small was a botanist and the first curator of The New York Botanical Garden. He specialized in flora of the south eastern United States, especially Florida. His well-known doctoral thesis "emph render italic Flora of the Southeastern United States" is considered a signficant reference material for florism in the South.
