1 National Caves Association Susan Berdeaux, Coordinating Director P.O. Box 280, Park City, KY 42160 270-749-2228 fax 270-749-2428 MIDWINTER 2008 ISSUE The NCA Executive Committee and Board of Directors were hard at work in Springfield, MO on February 5 7, 2008. The annual midwinter board meeting and Insurance Committee meeting were graciously hosted by President Steve Thompson at the Oasis Convention Center in Springfield. While two of the Insurance Committee members were unable to attend due to weather issues, everyone else made it to Springfield in between winter storms. Our president was accommodating enough to see that while we were there, it only rained when we were in meetings. He did NOT, however, do as well for the temperature – it was COLD! Many business items were discussed. Ann and Marion Dunlavy were kind enough to make the trip from Pennsylvania to give us an update on Convention 08. Lake Raystown Resort will be a unique venue, though it will be hard to concentrate on business due to the beautiful setting! Accommodations can include houseboats so now would be the time to rent one if you’ve ever been inclined to do so. A first for this meeting will be a REAL Gift show. Those of you who ask every year for more retail offerings should be pleased – plan to come in on Sunday, Oct. 5th so you can shop till you drop on Monday the 6th. The show will run from 12pm – 9pm that evening. You don’t even have to make a decision to go to the show or attend business meetings – the entire day will be a shopping day (unless, of course, you are one of those unfortunate few who will have to attend committee meetings!) If this is an activity you want to see continued at future conventions, please support this event. While on the subject of the convention, the timing of our annual meeting was also brought up. We hear, loudly and clearly, that October is a bad time for a number of members but we never hear what the best time is. The Convention Committee will be tasked with asking each of you to tell us the two best weeks out of the year for you to attend a convention but you don’t have to wait to be asked – let the office know NOW, while we are in the planning stage for future meetings. We realize that there is no perfect time when all can attend but if moving the meeting to another month or another time of year would increase attendance, we would surely consider it. We are pleased to report that we are over the halfway point in certification of alpha radiation plans. If you are one of the few remaining caves to complete your plan, feel free to ask for help from any member of the Executive Committee or Board of Directors – they are there to help. All plans need to be completed by the end of this year. Based on the spirited discussion at this past meeting regarding the bylaws revision, you can be sure they were addressed at this meeting. By May 1st, you will have the new, improved version. 2 general membership, the board made specific recommendations and sent the bylaws committee back to work. Chair Brad Wuest has made significant progress with the new document. Retail chair Claudia Yundt reported on group buying opportunities. Susan Berdeaux is working on a cave mug while Eric Evans is working with the Penny Machine Co to create a souvenir penny book just for caves with discounted pricing. Claudia met with Jeff Campbell, a retail committee member from Fantastic Caverns, to discuss direct buying opportunities from overseas. President Thompson formed two new committees while the board was in session. The new Education Committee will be chaired by Ann Dunlavy and the Vice chair is Ann Westcott, Cave of the Mounds WI. Ann & Ann (!) will be meeting to discuss goals and objectives. The second committee is the Public Relations Committee, chair TBD, with the objective of increasing public awareness of the NCA and show caves. Steve also made many suggestions to the board regarding long range fundraising for the NCA. Our various committees will be very busy once he has delegated some of those ideas to them! The board was also very receptive to his thoughts on public relations, which are engineered to sell more tickets to our attractions – and isn’t that what we all want?! You’ll all just have to stay tuned for more details. Or better yet, if you are interested in either of these topics, call Steve and he can fill you in and put you to work! The Insurance Committee met briefly before spending Thursday visiting area caves. Steve Runkle, committee chair, has some service issues with our broker but all agreed the program has come a long way from just four years ago. All of the officers and directors agreed the meeting was time well spent. If there are issues you would like the board to address, contact your regional director or any member of the Executive Committee. We work for YOU and we want to hear what you have to say, even if it’s not nice sometimes. This is a MEMBER association – if you don’t want anyone else making the decisions for you, you have a responsibility to speak up. With all these great minds, who knows what we can accomplish?!
