Greetings to the Commission: Th e 1 5 th International Symp osium on Vulcanospeleology in Amman, Jordan is right around the corner The front page of the web site of Hashemite University has a link in the lower right corner to details of the symposium, tours and registration Here is the link: http://hu.edu.jo/ If you have not already done so, please send Prof. Dr. Ahmad Al Malabeh your flight information regarding your arrival into Amman. Currently there are plans to have everyone stay in the same hotel to facilitate daily t ransportation to and from Hashemite University for the symposium. See you in Jordan! Cheers, Harry Marinakis Vice chairman Chris Wood April 4, 1947 January 19, 2012 It is with great sadness that we report the loss of our good friend Chris Wood, who died on January 19, 2012. In The News El Malpais National Monument New Mexico Our member Dave De cker reports good news about the lava cave closures at El Malpais National Monument. Since December 6, 2010 all caves in that area have been closed due to concerns about the spread of White Nose Syndrome WNS. David Hays is now the new Cave Resource Mana ger at El Malpais National Monument. Reportedly Mr. Hays plan s to reopen th e caves on a permit basis if WNS does not spread to that region of the U.S.A. An M emorandum of Agreement is being updated between the National Park S ervice NPS and the Nati o nal S peleological Society NSS. Hopefully the local chapter of the NSS, Sandia Grotto of Albuquerque will soon be able to r enew research and mapping trips. El Malpais National Monument is part of the Zuni Bandera Volcanic Field in the high desert of western New Mexico. W o MOV o C World Most Outstanding Volcanic Caves Our friends from the Azores report that, a fter a long period of dormancy they are now able to resume the W o MOV o C project. The site is ready and the Montanheiros Association will assume de project management with the coordination of Joo Paulo Constncia. The idea of a world database for the most relevant volcanic caves was first presented during the XI International Symposium on Vulcanospeleology, held in Pico Island, Azores, Portugal, in May 2004. GESPEA Azorean volcanic caves study group was established as the task force to accomplish the project. Therefore, in Tepotzlan, Mexico, at the XII Symposium, GESPEA group presented the concept and main principles for the WoMOVoC World Most Outstanding Volcanic Caves database. Two years later, in September 2008, attending the XIII International Symposium on Vulcanospeleology, in Jeju Island Korea, GESPEA group an nounced this website and presented the online database for the World Most Outstanding Volcanic Caves W oMO V o C http://worldvolcaniccaves.org/
