For the rst president of the new caving club is elected Georgi Arnaudov, for secretary – Petko Vekilov and responsible for the study and sports activity is Dimitar Ilandjiev. With the coming of spring, in 1964, the beginners-cavers get down to work as explorers of the underground world. The rst steps are shy, but people from the club take part in some national expeditions and quickly join the caver’s community, united in the structure of the National Commission for Caving. From the very beginning the club members are very keen in discovering new caves. The most active one is Dimitar Ilandjiev, who already reveals at that time his passion as one of the pioneers in the exploration of the caves

The next years the club studies caves around areas of Belogradchik, Montana, Lovetch, and the most important discovery is the abyss Yame-3, Vidin region. Their explorers give evidence that its depth is -307 m, which puts it on the rst place among the deepest caves in Bulgaria. Unfortunately, due to different reasons this fact is not con rmed yet! The club is proud of the fact, that his member is eng. Pavel 60XX .

Under his leadership the Ivan Vazov’s cavers work in the region of the karst spring ”Glava Panega” with the hope to nd a way to reach a supposed big cave system. Even the rst steps of the club are recognized by the leaders of the Bulgarian caving movement and the caving club ”Ivan Vazov” was awarded with the title “Model Caving Club”. Our club has deserved this title not only as a club-explorer, but because among its members are innovators, who offer new methods for saving injured from an abyss and invent a new belt for rock climbing and descending. This creative orientation of the cavers is demonstrated also by the initiative to give volunteer labor for building a hut ”Liyliaka” near vill. Belidie han, So a region. In 1966 D. Ilandjiev makes his rst attempt to descend in the legendary ”Blagova Yama” near the town of Etropole, but reaches only -55 m in depth. In 1967-68, with the help of V. Gyaurov and other cavers from the club, he passes the limit of -100 m. The next years reveal gradual descend and even stopping of club’s activity. The situation is worsened after 1975, when during the exploration of the abyss “Granicharskata” near vill. Komstitza tragically dies

After that time starts its revival, which became possible thanks to 4 “invaders”, coming from other So a club – Boyan Tarnteev, Veselin Mustakov, Ivailo Ivanov and Dimitar Dishovski. Boyan Tranteev was elected as a Chairman, and the study activities were given in the hands of V. Mustakov. Due to its rapidly growing activity the club becomes one of the leading clubs in the country, accepting the name “Helictit”. Just after two years of work are explored and mapped over 150 sites, among them – the 1100 m long cave “Sedlarkata”. Later the Helictitians undertake a systematic research of the Karlukovo karst region, which continues until now. There, as a result of intensive work are realized some of the most important and interesting discoveries – in 2001

The club takes part in the National sports and technical reviews, where its members demonstrate excellent preparation. Obviously this is not enough to satisfy the exploration ambitions of the cavers. Under the skilful leadership of graduates of the Mine-Geological University Ivailo Ivanov and Kiril Danailov the club undertakes scienti c studies with practical meaning in different karst regions – water-tracing experiments, geophysical studies, geodesic measures. Part of the results is reported to international conferences. In 1989 many of the club members have reached their peak of their caving development! That is why they decide to get busy outside of the country and look for possibilities to examine themselves in longer, deeper and complex caves outside Bulgaria. The start is made in the cave “ ltayskaya” Russia (-240 m), then comes the abyss “ milio Comichi” Italy (-747 m). In 1995 the Helictitians reach the bottom of the abyss “ ievskaya” (-990 m) in Uzbekistan. At the same time some in uent members of the club nd place in national expeditions abroad mainly in Albania and China. In parallel are continued and enlarged home cave explorations. Club members take part in the project for instrumental surveying with the aim to create a computer map

A beginning of explorations is put in the karst regions around Cherepish monastery in the river Iskar gorge, Strazha mountain, the plateau Ravna-Clokotish, Beglik part of the Vratza mountain, the massive Tzurni kamak, Goliama planina. The club joins the project for exploration of the circus Banski Suhodol in Pirin mountain. The persistence of the hard-working cavers gives results – discovered and explored are tens of new caves and the most interesting are the caves “Studenata” and “The Talk of the Water”. In this period the club consequently is among the winners in the national competition for the most important 2003 .

Parallel with the research activity, the club continues to organize annually training cave courses, which ensures the ow of “new blood”, as well as carrying out of spring and autumn camps. 1996 marks the beginning of preparation of a club bulletin, later transformed in an year-book! We are both proud and sad, because the club “Helictit” – So a still is the only Bulgarian caving club, which has its own annual magazine and already issued 17 serial books. The publishing activity is not limited with this! There are published also “Proceedings of materials from the national conference of speleology” – initiated and organized by the club, the books “Caves of Strazha planina”, “Caves of Ravna-Klokotish plateau”. In 2003 the club creates its own internet-page, which helps for the promotion of club’s activity to the public and the cave brotherhood in Bulgaria and abroad. Through the years continues the searching, exploring and documenting of new caves in different parts of the country. The accent is put on the region of Karlukovo, but Helictitians have stable presence as explorers in the Vratza mountain, including the cave “Temnata dupka” near Lakatnik. The success is fully deserved! It comes with the discovery of the new

PAGE 15

14 parts in the cave “Bankovitza”, which study continues nowadays, the abyss “Helictit 2006”, the new parts of the abyss “Yavoretz”, the continuation of the abyss “Steresgerska yama”, the cave “Trifalusnata”, the opening of new parts in “Temnata dupka” cave near Lakatnik, as well as the abyss “Mizhishnitza” and “Dineva pesht”. Stoichkov initiates an intensive research of the caves in the region Kraishteto and as a result on the map of this little known and weakly studied region appear tens of new caves. At the same time he put the beginning of club’s spelestological researches. After the joy of the big discoveries in the cave “Bankovitza” Karlukovo, probably the happiest moments for Helictitians are connected to the breakthroughs in the cave system “9-11” of Banski Suhodol, Pirin mountain. In this way the persistence and efforts of the clubs-organizers of these expeditions “ cademik” and “Helictit” – So a, as well as to all participants, are rewarded. The most important progress is seen in 2013, when the system “jumped over” -300 m depth and is already the 5th deepest among the Bulgarian caves. Thanks to the efforts of Iv. Aleksiev and Tr. Vasilev, the club carries out its rst cave-diving researches. The Helictitians actively participate in activities, organized in Bulgaria by the Federation and other cave clubs, which is a contribution to the general study of caves in our country. What is more, the club together with the Faculty of Biology – So a University “St. Kl. Ochridski”, the Institute of Microbiology and the Geological Institute of Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, participates in the project “Microbe Diversity in the Bulgarian cave “Magurata” and Protection of Unique Rock Pictures”, nanced by the National Fund for Scienti c Researches. Many things were done, but one of the most impressive results is the instrumental surveying of the cave and creating of its 3-D map. Club members under the leadership of eng. K. Danailov, work also for the instrumental surveying of the entrance hall of the cave “Devetashka”, which is the largest cave hall in the country. No matter how we wish, it is not possible here even to count all regions and separate caves, which are studied through the years since the foundation of the club, as well as the names of all researchers. It is important to know, that the efforts and work of all Helictitians have became reality through the completion of full documentation of 456 caves and part of them are caves and abysses from abroad – generally in Albania, Greece, Kyrgyzstan, China and Serbia. One of the priority activities of the club is the protection of caves and many things are done in this direction. Unfortunately most initiatives happen post factum, when club members have revealed problems and look for ways to solve them. Important step to the decision of such problems is creating of a site, linked to the club’s site with interactive data-base “Caves in Danger”. We take part in actions for cleaning caves and karst regions – Lakatnik, Bosnek, Karlukovo, Rakitovo. Club members participate actively in the national ecologic camps “Kartali”. Some club members are also active members of the Commission for Karst Protection to the Bulgarian Federation of Speleology and V. Drobenov and A. Zhalov take part in the activity of Commission for Cave Protection to the FSE (European Federation of Speleology). It is not possible to miss the international activity of the club. During the last years it is very intensive in three areas – organizing and participation in exploration expeditions; participation in sports-technical initiatives; participation in speleological camps, conferences, congresses and scienti c forums. In the rst group are activities in countries like Albania, Greece, Kyrgyzstan, China and Serbia – places, where are made pioneer discoveries. The sport descendings are limited to the expedition in Provatina – Greece, but “touristic” and study visits in small and big caves are made in Greece, Kosova, Macedonia, Romania, Turkey, Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia,

PAGE 16

15 Hungary, Ukraine, France, Montenegro Czech Republic and Switzerland. In 2000 and 2002 club members participate in the “International Youth Camp” in the Alps, Germany. It is a long list of the speleoforums, in which take part club members and where are presented reports of the club as part of the Bulgarian Caving Society in general. All 6 Balkan camps are visited, as well as several annual meetings of the Greek cavers, the European speleoforums in Great Britain, Spain, Italy, Hungary, France, congresses of the Romanian and Ukrainian speleological societies, conferences in Russia, Serbia, Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina! And nothing happens by itself! Behind all above mentioned stay the names of people – some of them are leaders of the band, some – in the role of ants-workers. It is not possible to mention all, who in one or other way are contributed to the growth and development of the club in its 50-years history, but rst of all it is necessary to point the names of the Chairmen of the club – Georgi Arnaudov, Liubomir Angelov, Marin Marinov, Boyan Tranteev, Venko Mustakov, Veselin Drobenov, Zivko Petrov, Ivan Petrov. Without any doubt we should mention the name of D. Ilandjiev, as well as some of the most famous ”engines” of the club like Veselin Mustakov, Kiril Danailov, Ivailo Ivanov, Nikolay Svestarov, Dimitar Dishovski, Alexey Zhalov (who joined the club in 1995) and of course – the names of the boys from the “younger” generation – Yani Makulev, Konstantin Stoichkov, Konstantin Kasabov, Petar Dimitrov (Papi), Ventsislav Ivanov… We are many – we are strong! – says an old slogan. In the previous years the club never has many members, but it was relatively strong and capable for many reasonable actions, which can defend not only its good name, but also are useful to the Bulgarian caving in general. Behind the mentioned facts and data there is no word of the dif culties, pain and the efforts, which keep the club to go on the way of caving, with all the joy of successful work and disappointments, when it is not possible to achieve the wished so quickly and easy, as it is wanted. Whatever to say, these things are inevitable, but the important things is that in spite of the dif culties, ups and downs of the time, club “Helictit” – So a is present today and its members meet its 50th anniversary with proudly head up. Long live, Helictitians!

The rst trip of the club abroad is in the USSR, near Cheremshanka village, Altai Krai, in 1989. The goal of the expedition is Altayskaya Cave – the longest cave in the Altai and the most technically complex one in Siberia, with a length of 1250 m (currently 4400 m) and a depth of –240 m. The expedition is comprised of seven members – K. Danailov (leader), S. Krasteva, G. Georgiev, D. Dishovski, I. Vreskov, M. Sokolov and P. Penchev from the Kazanlak Caving Club. During the expedition the “Geo zicheskaya” chasm (-135 m) was entered, as well. In the autumn of the same year an expedition to the „Abisso Emilio Comici“ chasm (–703 m) in the Julian Alps, Italy, was conducted, comprised of A. Vasilev (Bezmir), V. Mustakov, G. Georgiev, I. Ivanov, D. Dishovski, D. Levterov (Pinko), I. Vreskov, K. Danailov, M. Sokolov, R. Musta1989

Over the next 10 years, the club has had a lot of international activities, such as entering and cave visits for the purpose of study and sport – entries in Swiss ice caves; descending one of the biggest shafts in the world – „Provatina“; P. Dimitrov (Papi)’s participation in Russian-Bulgarian expedition to the seventh deepest chasm in the world, „Sarma”, and reaching bottom (–1549 m); Iv. Buserski’s participation in the Slovenian “Vandima” expedition – as well as participation of club members in various international caving forums (conferences, symposia, congresses and conventions), mainly by M. Stamenova and A. Zhalov in the European speleoforum in Marbella, Spain and four regional conferences. Club members initiated and organized the premiere Bulgarian expeditions to Mount Athos, Greece, Kyrgyzstan and China; in addition to that, club members were actively involved in the study of caves in Albania and Serbia. For the period after 2004 over 90 caves and abysses abroad have been studied, surveyed and described. In all, members of „Helictit” Caving Club have been in caves on four continents: Europe, Asia, Africa and America. “Helictit” members have been in caves in 19 European, 3 Asian and one African and American country, and all visits are described in detail. 2013 .

Konstantin Stoichkov Summary Form 24-th August to 8-th September 2013 was heeld the 12th edition of the exploratory expeditions in surcuss Banski Suhodol, Karst Ridge of north part of Pirin Mt., South Bulgaria. The expedition was held as Euro Speleo Project of European Federation of Speleology! The main goal of the expedition was a clearing of the narrowing at depth –271 m. The work in BS 9-11 was organized in shifts. In the beginning the cave was re-rigged with a new rope, provided by BEAL through the European Speleological Federation. Supports were also changed, where needed. During the re-rigging, some problematic narrow places on the way to the bottom narrowing were widened. At the same time, work on the bottom narrowing continued. A “chimney” above the underground campo was climbed. After the rst 15 meters, a small

A small stream is coming from the chimney, and there is a muddy alluvium. By visual judgment there are another 15 m in height, but the chimney does not follow the direction of the current bottom. In the middle of the expedition, after several bottom-cleaning shifts, the narrowing was overcome by a group consisting of Stefan Georgiev, Ivan Petrov and Lambros Makrostergios. After a short precipice, a small hall is reached. After crawling, a big, inclined hall is reached. A press follows and an inclined gallery with an underground stream is reached. There are several waterfalls on the stream. A narrowing by the water is reached where a strong air-current is felt, but to pass, one must lie in the water. In the new parts there are a lot of unchecked branches, as well as a separate upper oor. After the discovery until the end of the expedition two teams participated in surveying the new parts. After drawing the new parts (that which had been surveyed), the cave’s denivelation grew to –307 m and its length to 458 m. With the non-surveyed parts, the cave’s denivelation is probably about –320, –330 m (a visual estimate), but an end has not been reached, and there is a high probability that its denivelation is yet to grow. A large hall is reached with an unknown height, where no ceil-

The temperature in the new parts is 3oC. In the end of the expedition, the cave was partially de-rigged. Ropes were taken down from places, where there is a possibility that high waters would soak them; as well as the entry precipice where the rope is highly likely to freeze. After the new discoveries, the cave became the fth deepest chasm cave in the country. Field-work and scienti c research: For yet another year, several other caves and sites in the area were inspected, as well as some scienti c activities conducted. The levels of the snow-caps were checked for the following caves: BS 6 (+0.50 m), BS 7 (-5.80 m), BS 8 (-7.80 m), BS 10 (-5.80 m), BS 10 (-6.30 m), BS 12 (no snow), BS 13 (-1 m from the low side), BS 14 (-8 m from the higher entrance), BS 16 (-8 m), BS 23 (-4 m), BS 41 (-5.50 m), BS 42 (-2 m), BS 48 (-3. 43 m), BS 49 (-1.80 m), BS 55 (-3 m), BS 57 (-0.50 m), BS 65 (-2.94 m), BS 70 (-7 m), BS 71 (-2.63 m), BS 73 (-1 m), BS 76 (-4 m). As a whole, in most caves an increase of the snow-cap level is observed. An appliance was assembled from steel ropes and a cover was put on the perspective BS 6. The promising-to-continue caves BS 8 and BS 6 were checked. Unfortunately, both

Several new and perspective work-sites were found. Apart from BS 9-11 the precipice cave BS 25 was also visited with the purpose of sampling cave fauna, and more than 5 species of typical cave fauna were sampled. It was determined that the cave has a perspective for continuation, and a small amount of bat guano was found at the bottom. A net was put at the entrance of BS 30 with the purpose of capturing bats for DNA analyses. Bats of the species Plecotus auritus and Myotis bluthi were caught. A eld survey was conducted by geologist Yulia Statulova to record the cracks and faults in the cirque, clarify the perspectives and their application on a topographic base with a 1:10 000 scale.

Rock monasteries are found in the areas of : Shumen’s Boaz (Boaz from Turkish – Pass), Divdyadovski Boaz, Boaz monk, Troishki Boaz, Boaz and Osmar Valley Strazhka. Researchers date most of them back to the XII XV centuries. The rst report of the hermits is from 1640, when Archbishop Petar Bogdan Bakshev visited the area. The rst explorer of these monasteries are located Shkorpil Karel (1859-1944), which describes and made detailed sketches of many of them. More detailed information we nd from Stoyan Maslev in 1963. The hermits were explored also from – Tsv. Dremsizova and V. Antonova. The detailed maps were made by Bojan Marinov, At. Spassov, R. Radushev, St. Dimitrov, Z. Iliev, M. Mircheva and others.
