Abstract:
In creating a film about the French and Indian War, the students demonstrated various forms of metacognitive awareness as they navigated linguistic, gestural, spatial, aural, and visual modes. For example, they demonstrated “mode-switching” as an act of alternating between cultures of school (social studies content) and home literacies (war games) as well as among various semiospheres (gesture, visuals). In doing so, they operated within the medium of film as a catchment of hybridity.
