Notes

Abstract:
During my analyses, I identified several instances of recurring images of interest over time: images of Alice’s descent into Wonderland and of the Hatter character. I also identified strong themes of anthropomorphization in illustration. I identified the character’s gaze as a point of great interest to me as well. I isolated these themes as they manifest in images by creating another spreadsheet organized by theme. By isolating these themes visually, trends became more apparent. I was able to see changes in frequency, style, message, and more, then begin to develop those ideas based on my observations and readings. This image shows a screenshot of images of Alice’s descent into Wonderland, or “Down, down, down” as the scene is known, in isolation. This chart makes is apparent that representing this scene became more popular for illustrators over time.
