Notes

Abstract:
Final selection of the images I discussed in my own commentary was a complex process. The critical commentary by others about the art and artists sometimes played a role in my selection. I want readers of my work to see prominent artists and lesser well-known illustrators. Once I had narrowed my focus, it was necessary to gather more information to have something to say about the images to relate them to a larger conversation. I cross-referenced the critical literature I had already read with my observations in the illustrations. At times, I performed more targeted searches of literature databases to look for more specified information about the images I wanted to discuss. I also returned to Carroll’s Wonderland text and Tenniel’s first illustrations to further my understanding of the origins of ideas. This image shows the first page of an article I read discussing one particular artist’s images illustrating Wonderland so that I could relate them to my own observations.
