Abstract:
This is a Reflectance Transformation Image (RTI) which is a computational photographic method examining surface shape and color of this carved inscription from Haghpat Monastery, Armenia. This inscription is central to an altar feature at the east end of the N’Shan Church. The RTI allows viewing with interactive re-lighting of the surface from variable directions, and affords a better understanding of faint and eroded details. This type of imaging is also useful in that it allows for enhancement of surface shape and color and can be used to reveal new details not perceived in using other methods. For more information on the imaging technique, see: http://culturalheritageimaging.org/Technologies/RTI/.
General Note:
We would like to thank the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, Catholicosate of All Armenians for their support and participation in this project.
