Notes

Abstract:
These cross-mended Safety Harbor Incised sherds are from a ceramic beaker or bottle and were found at the Tierra Verde Mound in Pinellas County. The curvilinear design and vessel form are diagnostic of the Safety Harbor period which lasted from AD 900-1725. Rim sherds like these are helpful in reconstructing the original shape and size of the vessel. The rendering technique used here allows for better visualization of surface characteristics by providing a shadeless texture. 3D scanning and modeling help archaeologists to virtually study size, shape, surfaces, design, and other important aspects of ceramics. Lighting and rendering modes better visualize features and can strengthen analyses and interpretation.
