This ceramic body sherd was recovered from archaeological excavations at the Anderson Mound at the Jungle Prada Site Complex (8PI54), in St. Petersburg, Florida. Many of these artifacts, especially the ceramics, can be assigned to specific time periods based on their stylistic qualities. This sherd is diagnostic of the Safety Harbor period which lasted from AD 900-1725. The paste of this sherd is very contorted in cross-section, a diagnostic trait of many Safety Harbor ceramics. No one knows for sure why Safety Harbor potters made their ceramics this way, but some archaeologists have suggested that it may have helped to transmit or retain heat during cooking. This piece was scanned with a structured light instrument.
