Notes

Abstract:
This is a Cattle Mound site location in the Congaree National Park in South Carolina. Congaree contains the largest intact expanse of old growth bottomland hardwood forest remaining in the southeastern United States. These Cattle Mound sites were constructed by historic pioneers to the area and functioned as a refuge for hoof stock escaping periodic flood episodes. Aerial LiDAR survey combined with ground truth verification with GPS survey is allowing archaeologists and park managers to better understand and interpret these sites.
