bioghist altrender Administrative History 545 Administrative History:
William Hauben was born in Krakw, Poland in 1922 to a Jewish family. Hauben studied music from an early age and was involved in the choir and cantorial studies at his local synagogue. Following the Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939 Hauben and his family were relocated to a Jewish ghetto in Krakw. Hauben was subsequently transferred to four separate concentration and/or death camps, including: Paszw, Gross-Rosen, Ludwigsdor, and Ebensee. After the American liberation of the Ebensee camp, Hauben relocated to Italy, where he worked for the Jewish Brigade and studied vocal performance. Hauben immigrated to the United States in 1949 and eventually graduated from the Cantor's Institute of the College of Jewish Studies in Chicago. Afterwards, Hauben served as a cantor at Temple Beth Am in Los Angeles from 1958-1969 and at Rodeph Shalom in Tampa for more than two decades. Hauben was deeply engaged with local Jewish affairs and music in the Tampa Bay area, including the Jewish Music Festival. He also delivered lectures on his experiences during the Holocaust and authored two autobiographical accounts, emph render italic From the Flames: Miracles and Wonders of Survival and Light: Courage and Hope, both of which are accessible through USF Special Collections. Cantor Habuen passed away January 20, 2018.

Scope and Contents
To William Hauben. Sick and nothing but skin and bones, plucked then from the devil's hand. Now he is a living testimonial of man's terrible inhumanities to man. A picture hangs in the Smithsonian of prisoners our soldiers freed that day. Now only William can speak for them for all the others have passed away. Through his books, speeches, and stories of the Holocaust days back then and the hope down deep in his heart, nothing like this ever happens again. We could never begin to imagine what he and the others went through. I believe God guides this gentle man to tell people like me and you so that we always will remember what so many had to endure before to continue the fight against tyranny until this never happens any more.

Cantor William Hauben: A Man with a life long passion and desire to share. His visions of atrocities and horror he positively shares. He was a survivor and with love shares his experiences. It is easy to determine "it is not about me as he speaks." What he experienced in his early life very few survived. I believe the God of the universe was closely by his side. In the horrible conditions inside a prison camp he sang. His attitude was a statement to all, prisoners and guards. Today at an age most want to retire, his passion goes on. His memories of horrors he does not show, but he lives to tell. Cantor's determination to share is evident where ever he goes. He is Driven by Determination and Desire sharing his heart. Men with evil desires and hatred, Cantor saw in action. His Passion, Drive and Visio are an inspiration to me. Your writings help us to never forget the brutality you saw.
