Roy G. Francis was born December 25, 1919. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as an Administrative Noncommissioned Officer, Staff Sergeant, from 1942 to 1945. Francis worked as a professor of sociology, having earned his bachelor's degree from Linfield College in 1946, his master's degree from the University of Oregon in 1948, and his doctoral degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1950. In addition, Francis engaged in postdoctoral studies in mathematics at Harvard University.
Francis held the following academic positions before coming to the University of South Florida in 1974: Assistant Professor of Sociology and Research Associate at Tulane University, Professor of Sociology and Statistics at the university of Minnesota, and Dean of the College of Letters and Science and Professor of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. During his tenure at USF, Francis served as Professor of Sociology and as Chairman of the Department of Sociology. Francis retired in 1993. Francis was active in numerous civic and professional organizations, including the American Sociological Association, where he served as a Fellow, the American Civil Liberties Union, the American Association of University Professors, the American Platform Association, and the American Statistical Association.
