10559 - Burial of the Victims of the "Maine" in Their Final Resting Place, Arlington Cemetery, Va., Dec. 28, 1899.
1900
Scope and Contents
Keystone View Company, Manufacturers & Publishers. Copyright 1900 by B.L. Singley. Meadville, Pa., St. Louis, Mo., San Francisco, Cal., Toronto, Can., New York, N.Y., London, England. Verso reads: On Dec. 28th, 1809, the remains of the sailors who went down with the "Maine" in the harbor of Havana were laid to rest in the National cemetery at Arlington. Upon arrival of the funeral train, the 151 coffins were placed in army wagons and carried to the cemetery. President McKinley was accompanied by Secretary Long and by Capt. Sigsbee of the Texas, captain of the "Maine" at the time of her destruction. They were followed by Chaplain Clark, of the Naval Academy, and a detachment of blue jackets from the navy yard under Lieut. Grise, U.S.N., escorting the fifteen sailors of the Texas who had convoyed the bodies from Newport News to Arlington. A detachment of marines, under Lieut. Bates and one from the Marine Barracks, under Col. Harrington, accompanied by the Marine Band and troops of cavalry from Fort Myer, made a cordon around the graves. Among those on the stand were Assistant Secretary Allen, Commander Wainwright, Admiral Dewey, Secretary Root, Secretary Gage, Postmaster Guneral Smith, General Miles, General Gilmore, Colonel Michie, and others. Upon the arrival of the President the Marine Band began a dirge, and when the presidential party had taken their seats Chaplain Clark stepped forward to a little shelter neat the graves and read the Episcopal burial service. Chaplain Chadwick, formerly of the "Maine," then conducted the Catholic service, assisted by Fathers Holland and Bonner. Three volleys were then fired by the marines, "taps" sounded, and the crowd dispersed.

Scope and Contents
Keystone View Company, Manufacturers & Publishers, Copyright 1903 by B.L. Singsley. Meadville, Pa., St. Louis, Mo., San Francisco, Cal., Toronto, Can., New York, N.Y., London, England. Verso reads: "It is a white gleam, gold and glory!" So one visitor exclaimed at the first sight of the interior of this matchless liberty. Dr. A.R. Spofford, the veteran Librarian of Congress, to whom the nation is greatly indebted for the persistent agitation and entreaty which brought about the erection of this greatest of libraries, wrote of the scene before us: "The superb apartment is constructed throughout of the finest Italian marble, highly polished. From its four sides rise lofty rounded columns with Corinthian capitals richly carved, and its heavy but very graceful arches are adorned with marble rosettes, palm-leaves, and foliated designs of exquisite finish and delicacy. The lofty height of this fine entrance-hall, rising 72 feet to the skylight of stained glass, with its ornate vaulted ceiling and grand double staircase, and its white marble balustrades leading up on each side to the galleries above, produces and architectural effect both harmonious and imposing. It had been called a vision in polished stone, and a dream of beauty but only readers who have seen it can be expected to appreciate such terms of praise."

Scope and Contents
The Art Noveau (Platino) Stereograph, C.H. Graves, Publisher, Phila., U.S.A. The Universal Photo Art Co., Philadelphia, Naperville, Ill. Copyright 1900 by C.H. Graves. Verso reads: Irrigating An Orange Grove. Southern California already supplies the American market with nearly 80 per cent of the entire orange demand and promises within a very few years to not only increase this percentage but to extend its markets throughout the entire civilized world. A few years ago the surface of this great natural park was a wretched waste of cacti and sage brush, the haunt of the tarantula and rattlesnake. Warmth, equable climate, sunshine, absence of frost and generous soil, this section had naturally, but insufficient water. The average rainfall is slight and is confined to a few days in the winter months. The mountains gather up the rains as they fall and sent them downward in rushing torrents to the vast reservoirs which are now constructed to hold the excess water in check. From the reservoirs the water is piped down the valleys to the fruit ranches. At the entrance of every ranch is a meter which measures the quantity used. The payment for rental is placed at a certain per inch which means as much water as will run through a hole one inch square in an hour. The pipes are opened several times a year and the water allowed to flow between the rows of fruit trees in the little rivulets. Moisture and strength is thus given to the roots making fruit growing possible in a region which would otherwise be a desolate waste. Even now in southern California are vast areas baking in the sun and barren except for cacti, and water only is needed to make them teen with fruitfulness.

(11) 18765 The World Renowned Cathedral of Reims, France. Ruined by the Germans.
Scope and Contents
Keystone View Company, Manufacturers, Publishers. Made in U.S.A. Copyrighted. Meadville, Pa., New York, N.Y., Portland, Oregon, London, Eng., Sydney, Aus. Verso reads: The World Renowned Cathedral of Reims, France, Ruined by the Germans. Before us, marvelous in symmetry and beauty, even though shamefully defaced, towers the Cathedral of Reims, one of the architectural glories and historic shrines of France. This magnificent sanctuary of religion was bombarded and cruelly shattered by the Germans after they were driven out of Reims in September, 1914. They tried to justify their action by the false claim that the towers were being used for purposes of observation by the French, though as a matter of fact the great building was in use as a hospital. Nevertheless the enemy shelled it until the roof fell in, filling the interior with ruins, while some of the delicate stone columns of the towers were demolished and the priceless stained glass windows and countless pieces of exquisite stone carving were shattered. It was concerning the wanton mutilation of the Reims Cathedral that a distinguished German officer, Major General von Ditfurth, made his arrogant and infamous declaration in a leading German newspaper, the "Hamburder Nachrichten," in November 1914, saying:--"It is of no consequence if all the monuments ever created, all the pictures ever painted, and all the buildings ever erected by the great architects of the world were destroyed, if by their destruction we promote German's victory over her enemies. Let neutral peoples and out enemies cease their empty chatter, which is no better than the twittering of birds. Let them cease their talk about the Cathedral at Reims and about all the churches and castle of France which have shared its fate. These things do not interest us." 36090--Burial Ground. Plymouth, Mass.
Scope and Contents
Keystone View Company, Manufacturers, Publishers. Made in U.S.A. Copyrighted. Meadville, Pa., New York, N.Y., Chicago, Il., London, England. Verso reads: H29—(26090). Burial Hill, Plymouth, Mass. Back from the shore at Plymouth rises a steep hill and its top was wisely chosen by Captain Miles Standish as the proper place for a fort. In the language of the old historian, "The somer they built a fort with good timber both strong and comly which was of good defense, made with a slate rood and battlements on which their ordinance was mounted, and where they kept constant watch, especially in time of danger. It served them also for a meeting house and was accordingly fitted for that use." On Sabbath morning the drum was beat and every one formed in line three abreast to go to church, every man with sword and gun. First came the little army, then the women and children and at the end the Governor. On his right was Elder Brewster, the minister who was to preach; on his left marched Captain Miles Standish with sword and gun. Those who died the first winter were not buried here. Their burial place was planted to wheat to hide the graves from the Indians. But here lie Pilgrims who died later along with men who took part in the expedition against Louisburg in 1745 and many heroes of the Revolution and Civil War. From this hill there is a grand view of the harbor. The Pilgrims always kept a lookout stationed on the fort to give notice of any ship, and of any whale that came into view. There was a fine of twenty shillings for telling a lie about seeing a whale, while telling a pernicious lie about anything else cost only ten shillings. Copyright by The Keystone View Company.

Scope and Contents
Verso reads: In the Market, Christiania, Norway. Christiana is the capital of Norway and is situated about 80 miles from the sea. The new town was founded by Christian IV in 1624. The streets are at right angles to one another and the houses, except in the suburbs, are brick or stone and mostly two and three stories in height. As a place of commerce, Christiana has surpassed Bergen, and is now the first port of Norway. During three or four months of the year the harbor is ice-locked and ships then lie at Drobak, about 18 miles south.

652. Yokohama, Japan. Hon-mo-ku Sea and Beach, Showing Torii.
Scope and Contents
Verso reads: No. 652. Hommoku Beach, with Torii, Yokohama, Japan. A little south of Yokohama is the pretty suburb of Hommoku, on the bay of Tokio, not far from Treaty Point, where Commodore Matthew Galbraith Perry achieved a grander triumph in results than his brother, Oliver Hazzard Perry, on Lake Erie. He met the enemy, and they were his friends. On July 17th, 1853, Perry left Japan after he had with pomp and ceremony delivered President Fillmore's letter to the High Japanese Commissioner at Uraga. In February of the next year Perry, with a fleet of nine steamers, returned, but he insisted upon steaming nearer to eddo, and Yokohama was the chosen spot. The oldest people of Yokohama still speak of their amazement, when they saw the wondrously large ships move swiftly without wind, tide or oars. They believed that these foreigners, were not men, but half beasts, half sorcerers, with power to tame a volcano, condense its power in their ships and control it at will. At Treaty Point, on March 8th, 1854, were exchanged the formal article of convention between the United States and Japan. A8893.

Automatic Gathering Machine. Sears, Roebuck & Co., Chicago, Ill.
Scope and Contents
Sears, Roebuck & Co., Chicago, Ill. Verso reads: The great printing presses on the first floor of the Printing Press Building, print and fold the pages of our Big Catalogue in sections of 32 pages each. To make the complete book requires 38 of these 32-page sections, and these several sections of the book must be gathered together either by hand or machinery. The picture on the other side of this card shows you the Automatic Gathering Machine which gathers these different sections, ready for the Covering Machine. It is difficult to describe the mechanical operations of this machine—one of the marvelous inventions used in the printing industry. The 32-page sections are piled in boxes around both sides of this machine and with every turn of the wheel, a mechanical finger pulls one of these 32-page sections from the bottom of the pile and drops it upon a moving carrier beneath; as the finger returns to pull another section from the bottom of the pile, this carrier moves to another box to receive an entirely different sections, and by the time each carrier has moved from box No. 1 to box No. 38 it has received the 38 different sections and the book is complete. The mechanical fingers of this machine are operated by compressed air and are adjusted with marvelous accuracy. If, for instance, a page should be missing from a 32-page section, this finger instantly detects the defect and stopes the machine and displays a signal indicating where the trouble lies. On the other hand, if it should accidently get two sections between its fingers instead of one, it would immediately indicate the fault by stopping the machine and displaying the signal. In other words, this machine is so nicely adjusted that it automatically discovers any missing pages or excess of page; thereby preventing imperfect copies of the book passing to the Automatic Covering Machine. This machine guarantees better results therefore than were obtained by the old method of gathering by hand. This is the largest Gathering Machine in existence and was built especially to our order.
