Florida Library History ProjectBrevard Community College Librariesl The first Brevard Community College Library was born humbly in 1960, in the old Cocoa High School Building located on U.S. 1. The first student body consisted of 217 full-time and 517 part-time students, taught by 31 faculty members. The college was then a part of the Brevard County School System. From its birth in 1960, until 1971, the college was named Brevard Junior College. l The original Library collection contained 2,500 books, 165 periodical subscriptions, and in excess of 1,200 microfilm reels. 4,200 items were circulated the first year of operation. l In 1963 the college moved to its permanent Cocoa campus location on Clearlake Road. With the completion in1967-68 of the final phase III of the building program, the Cocoa campus had a total of ten ultra-modern buildings including the library. l In 1965, Brevard Community College and the Learning Resource Center were fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. l In 1968, Brevard Community College began opening site campuses. The first opened in Melbourne at the Henegar School with more than 1000 students enrolled. l In 1972, the first building of the permanent Melbourne Campus was completed and located at the corner of Post and Wickham Roads. l In 1975, the library moved to its permanent 2nd floor location in the L building. l In 1973, the Titusville Campus opened at the Gibson Center with an enrollment of less than 500 students. In 1977, it moved to a larger but still

temporary site at the former Whispering Hills Elementary School. l In 1979, the permanent campus was opened on US1. After eleven years of being a single building campus, Titusville was expanded to its present four buildings in 1990. It currently serves 1,500 students and local community. l In 1986, a television station was established within the Learning resources Center. Brevard Community College began broadcasting credit courses via television from the Melbourne Campus, through a local cable company. In a "channel swap" the college acquired channel 18 (WRES-TV). In 1987, the station was moved to the Cocoa Campus. l In 1990, Palm Bay opened its first building. The campus called the Florida Advanced Technology Center accommodated 2,000 students. The Center is currently planning for the addition of a new 71,568 square foot building that will also house the 17,054 square foot library. The library is currently serving 2,598 patrons. l In 1992-93 all Brevard Community College Libraries were automated and LINCC (Library Information Network for Community Colleges) replaced the old fashioned wooden card catalog. l In 1995, The Cocoa Library moved to its current three-story building. This is a joint-use facility with the University of Central Florida called the BCC/ UCF Joint Use Library. (Photo of this facility is above). l The collection today, 1997-98, of the Brevard Community College libraries contains over 172,610 books, 1,750 periodical subscriptions, 180,694 microforms, 1,474 units of graphic materials, 3,243 sound recordings, 2,056 films and videos and a rapidly growing number of electronic resources.
