Punta Guanos, at the Northern coast of Matanzas province, 90 km East from Havana, Capital of Cuba, shows a particular karst and cave development in carbonate Upper Miocene-Quaternary rocks. This coastal landscape has been controlled by the combined effects of the neotectonic activity of a Cretaceous-Paleogene fault system dominantly oriented 120o that became active again during Quaternary times and others more recent clearly of Plio-Quaternary age as well as by the sea level fluctuations during glacial times. Three main features are the product of these combined effects: a) Abandoned phreatic passages above present sea level; b) Elevated abrasive (marine) caves and c) Submarine springs. Neotectonics is still active. The effect of the present rise of sea level due to Climate Change introduces important restrictions to the environmental management of an ecotone and vulnerable coastal zone that has to combine oil and gas exploration & production, beach and sun tourism, water supply to small communities and the preservation of a protected area with strict floral endemic species.
