Notes

Abstract:
This screenshot shows an excerpt from the chart I created in a format very similar to the way I organized the illustrations themselves. I organized my observations with one illustrator in each column and a chapter of Wonderland in each row. As I looked closely at each image in my research collection, I responded the the prompts of my Illustration Analysis Tool. I worked chapter by chapter through editions chronologically. I started with Lewis Carroll’s manuscript illustrations and John Tenniel’s published illustrations of chapter 1, and worked my way through chapter 1 to most recently published illustrations. After looking at all chapter 1 illustrations, I worked through chapters 2-12 of Wonderland in the same way. Not every line of my prompting text applied to each image, but the prompt was helpful in guiding my thinking. I also believe this prompting system helped me to sustain focus for much longer than if I had not used a tool for looking, as I often experienced something like museum fatigue, wherein a viewer can only attend to so many visual details in a given period without losing focus and interest. This kind of systematic looking also helped me to identify points of interest for closer analysis as I narrowed the foci for my discussion of findings.
