This large 70 acre park, managed by the City of St. Petersburg Parks and Recreation, is located where Boca Ciega Bay joins Tampa Bay. There are today a variety of uses and activity areas at the park, and important archaeological and historic sites are also located here. In the 1940s the area was unofficially designated as a “Negro Bathing Beach”. Maximo Hernandez, one of the first white settlers on Pinellas peninsula had a fishing rancho there in the 1840s. There are also extensive shell middens, two shell mounds, and other archaeological features preserved today at the park. The Maximo Beach site was determined to be eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, and the entire park is designated as a Local Landmark site by the City.
