July 26, 2012 Sharyn Dear Ms. , I’d l ike to share a young adult manuscript with you. Minutes” is for an older audience than the majority of the 30-some books I’ve published, mostly with Harcourt, so now seemed a good time to approach a different publisher. 17year old Zoe Mahar lives in foster care and by both society's measure and her own is pretty much a loser. Then one day she ducks into Spencerport Savings and Loan simply to get out of the rain—and witnesses a bank robbery gone wrong. The attractive young man she has just met, who has gone out of his way to do her a small kindness, is shot and killed. But this is a case of good news/bad news. The good news is Zoe has the ability to play back the last 23 minutes of her life, so all she needs to do is go back in ti me and get the poli ce to in tervene and stop the robbery and avert bloodshed. The bad news is—once she does that—there’s an even more disastrous outcome, with more people getting killed. The worst news is Zoe has only 10 tries before this particular 23 minu tes be comes irreversible. Sh e's the only one with memory of reliving through the same events repeatedly, and she’s having trouble getting people to believe her. And meanwhile, and very inconveniently, she finds herself growing more and more attracted to that young customer who almost always gets himself killed. Attached are the first 3 chapters of Minutes.” I hop e you enjoy. Please feel free to contact me by phone: or e mail: Sincerely, Vivian Vande Velde www.VivianV a ndeVelde.co m
